XL Insurance, the global insurance operations of XL Group, has expanded its product recall team with new underwriters in New York and London.

XL Insurance said that the move follows increasing demand for food and beverage product contamination cover, especially for North American companies, with the passing of stricter regulation and introduction of mandatory recall authority for regulators overseeing certain food and beverages products.

As part of the expansion, XL Insurance appointed John Turner into New York team as new product recall manager for North America and Mark Hutton as product recall manager for London market business. Turner and Hutton will report to Ed Mitchell, global practice leader for Product Recall.

Turner has over 20 years of insurance market experience, including multi industry product recall and product liability cover in North America. Most recently, he was vice president and head of casualty at McLarens Young International in Boston.

Hutton has 15 years of industry experience, specializing in product recall and product liability cover across the food & beverage, pharmaceutical and consumer goods sectors.

Hutton will join XL Insurance from McLarens Young International’s UK operation where he was head of casualty having previously also worked at Lloyd’s Syndicate #3210 (Mitsui Sumitomo).

Mitchell said the company continue to expand the coverage and expertise to provide comprehensive product recall protection. John and Mark will further enhance the underwriting and servicing capabilities.

"The new US law has highlighted the importance of risk management in food safety and we look forward to supporting policyholders through our underwriting approach which integrates policy coverage with Response XL, our risk engineering and crisis management service," Mitchell said.
