XL Insurance, the global insurance operations of XL Group, has promoted Gavin Bruce-Smythe to new chief underwriting officer (CUO) for its international property & casualty (P&C) business.

Previously chief underwriting officer, excess casualty international, Bruce-Smythe’s new responsibilities as CUO will include underwriting oversight across XL Insurance’s property and casualty operations outside of North America.

Based in London, he will report to Eileen McCusker, chief executive of International P&C operations of XL Insurance.

Bruce-Smythe has over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry. He joined XL Insurance in Dublin in 1995 as an excess liability underwriter and progressed to client relationship management.

In 2001, he moved to London to manage the UK region’s primary liability portfolio taking additional responsibility for the Dublin and London excess units in 2008. In 2009, he was appointed chief underwriting officer, excess casualty international.

McCusker said Gavin will work closely with different P&C underwriting units to identify market opportunities and client needs and to ensure a continued focus on underwriting excellence.

"He will also co-ordinate with different units on complex account transactions and actively promote product development," McCusker said.
