W R Berkley Corporation, a US-based commercial insurance holding company, has posted a net income of $83m or $0.56 per share for the second quarter of 2011, compared to $110m or $0.70 per share, for the second quarter of 2010.

The total revenues were $1.27bn for the second quarter of 2011, compared to $1.16bn in the prior-year period.

Operating income for the second quarter of 2011 was $$68m, compared to $102m in the same quarter of the last year.

In the second quarter of 2011, the net premiums written were $1.05bn, compared to $961m in the corresponding quarter of the 2010.

WR Berkley chairman and CEO William Berkley said with both rising prices and increased volume; the firm maintains positive view for improving rates in the commercial insurance market.

"Our book value increased by 4% in the quarter. We continue to be optimistic about our results for the foreseeable future," Berkley said.
