The Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds estimates that it could cost the state an additional $10 million

The Governor has signed a law stating that residents of Wisconsin, US, who still live with their parents, can soon avail health care coverage, effective February 2010 – reported in Fox 21 News.

The Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds estimates that it could cost the state an additional $10 million, and could cost local governments up to $1.8 million. The Department said that based on census figures, roughly 17% of people between age 19 and 26 in Wisconsin, are currently uninsured.

The insurance mandate was part of the new state budget which the Governor has signed, covering commercial insurance policies and government policies of consumers who are 26 and younger. Right now, policies only have to cover dependants up to the age of 18.

The mandate for young adults would not extend to anyone who is married, or who can get insurance through their employer for less money. It would extend to full-time students of any age if they were 26 or younger, when their education was interrupted by a call-up to active duty in the National Guard.
