Mercury Financial launched its underwriting unit that will focus on hospitality risks & indoor recreational facilities

US-based First Mercury Financial has launched its new underwriting unit that will focus on hospitality risks and indoor recreational facilities.

The business will be written through First Mercury’s CoverX platform, and will be overseen by John Bures, senior vice president of CoverX. The new unit will be headed by Bradford Lyons, underwriting vice president, and supported by three additional underwriting professionals, Amie Berry, Julie Gossard and Kathleen James.

The company has said that the product includes a special emphasis on liquor liability, property and crime coverage for small to mid-sized accounts. The underwriters are located in Southfield, Michigan.

Mr Lyons has most recently served as senior vice president of underwriting for North Pointe Holdings, where he oversaw the underwriting for all of North Pointe’s insurance operations. Mr Lyons graduated with a BA degree from Hope College.

Richard Smith, chairman and CEO of First Mercury Financial, said: We are pleased to welcome Brad to the First Mercury team. His experience in these classes of business will permit us to continue to build out our best-in-class specialty niche underwriting platform. This is another example of our strategy to hire underwriters with successful long term track records across multiple market cycles to add to our portfolio of specialty niche books of business.
