Health insurer Cigna has reported a net income of $429m, or $1.57 per share, for the first quarter of 2011, compared to $283m, or $1.02 per share in the same quarter last year.

The adjusted income from operations for the first quarter of 2011 was $375m, compared to $281m in the first quarter of 2010.

In the first quarter of 2011, the total revenue was $5.41bn, compared to $5.20bn for the same quarter of 2010.

Cigna said that the revenues reflect premium and fee increases of 6% in health care, 4% in disability and life, and 32% in international, driven by continued growth in the targeted customer segments.

Cigna president and CEO David Cordani said the first quarter results represent a strong start towards achieving the full year 2011 goals, with good revenue growth and strong earnings contributions from each of the ongoing businesses.
