The new combined overland water and sewer backup product is available as an endorsement to all eligible Ontario personal property insurance policies, which have sewer backup protection.

The new product has been designed to protect homeowners and tenants from fresh water flood damage happening due to accumulation of surface water, including rainfall that enters the property.

According to the company, eligible customers account for 80% of its existing personal property policies, and will receive the enhanced coverage.

Gore Mutual Insurance vice president Anna McCrindell said: "We know that water damage is now a significant threat to Canadian homes.

"Our enhanced WaterEscape Plus solution provides thorough, competitive and affordable overland water and sewer backup protection as part of our home insurance product."

Generally, personal property insurance policies cover water damage caused within the home such as burst pipes and sewer backup.

After the severe floods in Alberta and Toronto in 2013, most of the insurers have also expanded the policy coverage to the overland water damage.

The firm also noted that it is involved in developing solutions to offer affordable coverage to 95% of its Ontario and British Columbia customers.

Founded in 1839, Gore Mutual provides property and casualty insurance products to its customers. It has $400m in premiums and $1bn in assets as of December last year.
