US healthcare insurer Aetna is to acquire ActiveHealth Management, a medical management and healthcare data analytics firm, for $400m.

ActiveHealth Management provides clinical decision support and healthcare data analytics tools in an effort to enable physicians and members to analyze the healthcare of their covered membership. These products and services, powered by its CareEngine System, are designed to improve clinical care and outcomes and reduce medical costs.

As part of the acquisition, Aetna said it intends to profitably grow ActiveHealth as a branded, standalone business, while being able to enhance the scope if its own products and serve new market segments.

We believe this new relationship sets the stage for ActiveHealth to continue to lead in developing new solutions and technologies focused on evidence-based medicine and innovative applications of technology, while benefiting from the leadership and resources of one of the nation’s leading health care companies, said Lonny Reisman, CEO of ActiveHealth.

Aetna expects to close the transaction during the second quarter of 2005, and predicts it to become accretive to earnings within the ensuing 12 months.
