Health insurer Cigna has appointed Mark Boxer as new chief information officer, effective from 25 April 2011.

In this role, Boxer will lead Cigna’s global technology strategy, succeeding Philip Emond, who is retiring from the company.

Boxer will work side-by-side with Phil Emond during a transition period that will extend until summer, 2011.

Boxer is an IT professional with significant technology experience in the health care sector. Most recently, he was group president, government health care for ACS/Xerox and global deputy chief information officer for Xerox.

He also has served as the chief information officer at WellPoint, and in a variety of other IT executive roles.

Boxer will be rejoining CIGNA, where he formerly led CIGNA’s eCommerce practice and played a key IT leadership role during its Healthsource acquisition and integration.

Cordani said Mark is ideally suited to drive the execution of the technology strategy to best serve the customers and help them live healthier lives.
