MetLife has reported a net income of $830m, or $0.78 per share in the first quarter of 2011, compared to $805m, or $0.97 per share, in the same period last year.

Operating earnings were $1.42bn for the first quarter of 2011, compared to $0.86bn for the corresponding period of the previous year.

Total revenues were $15.91bn for the first quarter of 2011, compared to $13.10bn for the same quarter last year.

MetLife president and CEO Steven Kandarian said with record top-line performance and a 64% increase in operating earnings over the first quarter of 2010, MetLife delivered very strong results in the first quarter of 2011.

"In addition to benefiting from the acquisition of Alico, we grew operating earnings in our US Business by 15% while total net investment income increased 14% over the first quarter of 2010," Kandarian said.
