The insurance industry was an early adopter of technology, taking advantage of mainframe technologies to automate core insurance processes. In hindsight, this proved to be both a blessing and a curse. Though insurers saved money thanks to the use of these automated systems, they also came to rely heavily on proprietary, internally developed systems that in many cases were poorly documented and rarely updated.
