Global insurance company Zurich has appointed Tom de Swaan as its new chairman, who will succeed Josef Ackermann, who stepped down recently.

Further, the multi-line underwriter has appointed Fred Kindle as vice-chairman, who previously served as chairman of Exova and CEO of ABB.

A former chief financial officer at ABN Amro, De Swaan has served on the board of Zurich Insurance Group since 2006, and was elected to the role of vice-chairman in March 2012.

In 1972, he joined De Nederlandsche Bank and from 1986 until 1998, served as a member of the governing board. In January 1999, he appointed as a member of the managing board and chief financial officer of ABN AMRO Bank and retired in May 2006.

Since April 2006, De Swaan has been a member of the Boards of Zurich Insurance Group and of Zurich Insurance Company and in March 2012 he was elected vice-chairman, acting as chairman from August 2013.
