XL Group's insurance segment has hired Michael Gramm as the vice president to manage the new Excess & Surplus (E&S) product line that includes Excess Auto in a move to address the brokers and clients’ risk needs.

Gramm will be based in Chicago and will report to president of XL’s E&S unit Roxanne Mitchell. Prior to XL’s E&S, Gramm worked for Markel Corporation where he served as a director, transportation product lines.

With a decade of experience in transportation risk management in underwriting, he also held a variety of management positions at Risk Specialists Companies, a division of CHARTIS and National Interstate Insurance Company.

Mitchell added that the company will enhance both its surplus lines products and distribution. Recently, the firm had added both railroad and property expertise for increased clients’ coverage needs.
