WellPoint, a health benefits company, has appointed Douglas Wenners as senior vice president for Provider Engagement and Contracting succeeding Bob McIntire.

Currently Wenners serves as president and general manager for WellPoint’s affiliated health plan in New Hampshire.

In his new role, Wenners will oversee provider relations, provider contracting, and network management for WellPoint, effective 1 January 2011.

Wenners began his career with WellPoint in 2001 as senior legal counsel. Since then, he has held a number of key leadership roles, most notably as vice president and general manager of WellPoint’s health care management division for New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Virginia and Georgia.

Wenners was named president and general manager for WellPoint’s affiliated health plan in New Hampshire in 2008.

WellPoint executive vice president, chief medical officer, and interim president of comprehensive health solutions Sam Nussbaum said Wenners brings strong leadership capabilities and a track record of success to this vital role at WellPoint as the firm continues to team with physician and hospital providers and advance innovative payment models that improve the quality and affordability of health care.
