WellPoint has launched a new reimbursement initiative in partnership with primary care physicians to improve quality and reduce medical costs.

The new initiative will also include company’s multiple medical home pilots’ best practices.

The participating physicians will benefit from additional revenue that includes general increase to the regular fees paid to physician practices for specific services and shared saving payments for quality outcomes and reduced medical costs.

The initiative will allow WellPoint to enhance information sharing, and provide care management support from its clinical staff.

The participants must meet plan quality requirements include quality standards established by organizations such as the National Committee on Quality Assurance and others.

The programme is expected to improve quality and member health by gradually reducing trend in overall medical costs by as much as 20% by 2015.

WellPoint is schedule to execute the patient-centred primary care programme during the third quarter of 2012 in selected markets following the implementation of the programme across its primary care network by the end of 2014.
