United Insurance Holdings, a property and casualty insurance holding company, has said that United Property & Casualty Insurance Company (UPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary, was approved to commence writing property and casualty insurance in the state of South Carolina.

According to the United Insurance, UPC has agreed to assume a $5m and growing book of business in South Carolina from Sunshine State Insurance, effective July 1, 2010.

Don Cronin, CEO of United, said: “We announced in February that we would be submitting applications to write business in South Carolina and six other states. We have now received approval to begin writing in South Carolina, which provides us with an exciting opportunity to expand our geographic footprint outside of Florida.”

Mel Russell, senior vice president and chief underwriting officer at United Insurance, said: “We believe that UPC’s products particularly fit the needs of South Carolina’s homeowners, and we are confident that our expansion will be a success. We look forward to building upon the successful partnership that Sunshine State established with their agents in South Carolina.”
