Specialty insurer Torus has appointed Jose Ramon Gonzalez as new general counsel, based in Jersey City.

Gonzalez will be reporting to Clive Tobin, chief executive. He will assume the overall responsibility for Torus’ legal, regulatory and compliance function worldwide.

He will join Torus from Chartis, where he was most recently served as deputy general counsel for its US operations.

Gonzalez joined AIG in 1999 as part of the law department’s mergers and acquisitions group, representing the company globally in acquisitions, joint ventures and investments relating to AIG’s insurance and asset management businesses.

Prior to AIG, Gonzalez was a corporate associate at the New York and London offices of Weil, Gotshal and Manges.

Torus offers a diversified property, casualty and specialty insurance, as well as reinsurance products, to a global client base through its European, US and Bermudian based insurance subsidiaries.
