Canadian insurer Sun Life Financial (SLF) has reported a net income was C$408 or C$0.71 per share in the second quarter of 2011, compared to C$72m or C$0.13 per share in the same period last year.

The total reported revenues for the quarter were C$5.2bn, compared to C$6.7bn in the same period last year.

Operating net income for the quarter was of C$425m, compared to C$155m in the second quarter of 2010.

Net income for the first six months of 2011 was C$846m, compared to C$486m for the same period a year ago.

SLF Canada had net income of C$231m in the second quarter of 2011, compared to C$60m in the second quarter of 2010.

Sun Life Financial CEO Donald Stewart said the company saw strong year-over-year growth in total assets under management of almost $40bn due to favourable market movements and increased net sales, offset by the stronger Canadian dollar.
