Insurance company Markel Corporation has named Anthony Markel as vice chairman and Paul Springman as president and chief operating officer.

Mr Markel has been associated with the company for over 40 years, most recently serving as president and chief operating officer since 1992.

Mr Springman has been serving as executive vice president of Markel since 2002. Prior to that, he was with its wholly owned subsidiary Shand Morahan from 1984 to 2002, where he last served as president and chief operating officer.

Alan Kirshner, chairman and CEO, said: The new roles will allow us to further implement our succession planning while preserving access to the experience of a management team that has achieved great success since Markel went public in 1986.
