Lloyd's, a specialist insurance market, has joined with brokers Marsh, Cooper Gay and RK Harrison Group to trial the use of iPads in its underwriting room.

Lloyd’s said that the trial which is set to start in early September 2010, will see the iPads used as an alternative to the slips.

The iPads will be used as an ‘electronic slip case’, and will allow brokers to take documents in to the market electronically, review documents with underwriters and annotate them where required.

In addition, each broker will decide which business area they will trial the units in. The trial is expected to last for three months, with other brokers joining the pilot shortly.

Lloyd’s market operations director Sue Langley said the iPad is a small, simple pilot device, and by replacing the paper with it, allows amendments and links to other services, that the company continues to support underwriting and face-to-face negotiation.
