Hawaii Medical Assurance Association (HMAA) and Summerlin Life and Health Insurance Company have reached a definitive agreement under which HMAA will acquire the fully insured health insurance membership of Summerlin Life and Health Insurance in Hawaii.

According to Summerlin, its affiliates HMA and Health Management Network will continue to market and deliver claims administration and provider network services to large self-funded employee benefit health plans in Hawaii.

John Henry Felix, chairman, president and CEO of HMAA, said: “This is a great acquisition for HMAA as our company begins its third decade of serving businesses and their employees across Hawaii. HMAA prides itself on providing outstanding customer service, broad provider networks and innovative products. This move will provide both HMAA’s and Summerlin’s members with a wider choice of comprehensive benefit options that will help protect them and their families.

“We look forward to increasing HMAA’s presence as a valuable health plan choice for Hawaii’s business community. The addition of Summerlin’s existing health plans to HMAA gives our members more choices for saving and stretching their health care dollar.”

Paul Carter, president and CEO of Summerlin Life and Health Insurance, said: “We remain dedicated to ensuring that our customers continue to receive high-quality health care coverage and will do all that we can to enable a smooth transition to HMAA.

“Summerlin’s parent company continues to be focused on a clear and definable plan to nationally grow its significant third-party administration business, its provider networks and its information technology business.”
