Highmark, a Pennsylvania-based health insurer, and Geisinger Health System have signed a new four-year contract effective 1 January 2011.

The existing agreement had been set to expire on 31 December 2010. The terms of the new agreement were not disclosed.

Under the new contract, Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and Geisinger Clinic physicians will remain network providers for Highmark’s indemnity and managed care members, and will continue to participate in networks currently under contract in 2010.

Highmark senior vice president, Provider Services and Strategy Mike Fiaschetti said that this agreement will enable Highmark to maintain the long-standing relationship with Geisinger Health System and provide members with continued access to Geisinger’s excellent medical facilities and physicians.

Geisinger executive vice president and chief medical officer Albert Bothe said through the agreement all patients with Highmark coverage would be able to continue to benefit from the quality and value Geisinger delivers.
