US commercial property and casualty insurance provider, CNA Financial (CAN) has appointed Mark Herman as president and chief operating officer of CNA Specialty.

Herman is taking over from Peter Wilson, whose retirement will be effective from 31 December 2012 after being in the insurance industry for more than 25 years.

CNA chairman and chief executive officer Thomas F Motamed said that Pete Wilson led some of CNA’s most successful businesses.

"After much discussion, Pete, who has deep roots in the East, decided to retire and pursue other East Coast-based opportunities," Motamed added.

In addition to serving Everest National Insurance Company as chief executive officer, Mark Herman earlier served Chubb & Son, ACE and Ariel Holdings.

Herman will join CNA, effective from 01 January 2013.

Established in 1897, CNA is the US seventh largest commercial insurance writer and the 13th largest property and casualty underwriter, which offers standard commercial lines, specialty lines, surety, marine and other property and casualty coverages.
