Brown & Brown has reported a net income of $49.43m, or $0.34 diluted earnings per share, for the first quarter of 2012,an increase of 6.3%, compared to $46.29m, or $0.32 diluted earnings per share, for the same period in 2011.

The total revenues for the first quarter of 2012 increased 15.4% to $302.49m, compared to $262.23m for the same period a year ago.

Income before income taxes was $82.79m for the quarter, compared to $76.67m for the same period prior year.

Brown & Brown chairman and acting president and CEO Hyatt Brown said that the 2012 first quarter produced results that were better than the company anticipated.

"In addition to growing our earnings per share by 6.3%, we were pleased to note that our organic growth rate for our core commissions and fees revenue was a positive 0.9%," Brown said.
