Insurance giant Aviva is laying off 85 jobs in Leicester and London amid the growth of its digital platform.

The decision from the company will see the clousre of its office in Leicester, resulting in 82 people made redundant.

The job cutting process will be implemented with immediate effect till the end of this year.

Also affected by the decision are 27 employees working at the same office in Princess Road West who are likely to be shifted to another location in the future.

The insurnace firm is planning to lay off three jobs in London.

Britain’s largest union, Unite, has started to protest Aviva’s decision.

Unite national officer for finance Dominic Hook said: "Any loss of jobs is to be strongly deplored but we are working closely with the company to mitigate the number of jobs under threat.

"The company is planning to reduce the staff from the current figure of about 116 roles in Leicester, with those staff retained moving to a more mobile operation, either based in brokers' offices or working from home with occasional site or broker visits.

"We have just entered the 45-day consultation period and Unite will be doing all it can to provide maximum support to our members at Aviva at this time of worry and uncertainty for them."

The regular work that takes place at the Leicester office will give way to the new digital hub set up by Aviva in either Perth, Scotland or will be handled by one of its local underwriting teams.

A small underwriting team will reportedly be retained in Leicester.
