Arch Capital Group has reported a net income available to common shareholders for the 2009 third quarter of $274.4m, or $4.39 per share, compared to $26.4m, or $0.42 per share, for the 2008 third quarter.

The company has reported a net income of $566.4m, or $9.05 per share, for the nine months ended September 30, 2009, compared to $408.1m, or $6.23 per share, for the 2008 period.

The company has also reported after-tax operating income available to common shareholders of $160.3m, or $2.56 per share, for the 2009 third quarter, compared to $64.1m, or $1.02 per share, for the 2008 third quarter, and $492.4m, or $7.87 per share, for the nine months ended September 30, 2009, compared to $451.5m, or $6.89 per share, for the 2008 period.

For the 2009 third quarter, the combined ratio of the company’s insurance and reinsurance subsidiaries consisted of a loss ratio of 60.6% and an underwriting expense ratio of 29.4%, compared to a loss ratio of 74.9% and an underwriting expense ratio of 30.4% for the 2008 third quarter.

For the nine months ended September 30, 2009, the combined ratio of the company’s insurance and reinsurance subsidiaries consisted of a loss ratio of 58.3% and an underwriting expense ratio of 29.7%, compared to a loss ratio of 63.2% and an underwriting expense ratio of 29.7% for the 2008 period.
