Aetna, a diversified health care benefits company, has said that Mark Bertolini, currently president and head of business operations, will be appointed as new CEO and elected to the company’s board of directors, effective 29 November 2010.

Bertolini will succed Ronald Williams, who will become an executive chairman of the company. Williams is scheduled to retire in April 2011.

Aetna has added that the board intends to elect Bertolini to the additional role of chairman of the board upon the retirement of Williams.

Bertolini joined Aetna in February 2003 and held a various roles with increasing responsibilities before being named president in July 2007. Prior to this, he held positions with Cigna and NYLCare and had been CEO of SelectCare.

As full-time executive chairman, Williams will focus on board duties as well as Aetna’s chairman’s initiatives, public policy and federal regulatory strategy.
