Aetna has appointed Michael Mathias as new vice president and chief information officer, reporting to executive vice president Meg McCarthy.

In his new role as CIO, Mathias will have oversight of AIS delivery, strategy, operations, technology and architecture and will be charged with leading innovation efforts and implementing Aetna’s long-term technology strategy.

Mathias has served as Aetna’s chief technology officer since 2008 and was head of AIS Enterprise Architecture from 2006 to 2008.

In these roles, he was responsible for aligning Aetna’s technology vision with business strategy by integrating company processes with the appropriate technologies. He joined Aetna in 1993 as a systems engineering manager.

McCarthy said Michael Mathias is highly regarded in the industry for his strong technical knowledge and he has the skills and health care experience to lead Aetna Information Services (AIS) going forward.
